PEOPLE WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS

At Swim 121 we believe swimming should be available to everyone. Water does not discriminate; every non swimmer starts at the same level and with a little time, patience and understanding there is no reason that living with a disability should be an obstacle to swimming.  We have seen clients achieve marvellous results, often exceeding the abilities of the average person.

We have had particular success with children that suffer from Down syndrome, Autism, attention deficit disorder, Asperger Syndrome and other behaviour disorders. Class lessons do not always work for people that have these problems due to the many distractions caused by large noisy environments, other pupils and the formal type of lesson that is delivered at most public pools.

The lessons are tailor made to the needs of the individual our emphasis is on fun and learning through play. We do if possible teach formal strokes but try not to spend too long on any individual routine as this can often result in a lack of concentration and difficulty staying on task.

Our Teacher demonstrations and instructions are very visual rather than verbal, so this works well with clients that have learning difficulties or have problems with hearing.

Unfortunately our pool building is not wheel chair friendly and we do not have a pool hoist. So although we are happy to try and accommodate anyone with a physical disability access is restricted.

  • All our instructors are CRB checked,
  • All instructors teaching clients with Additional needs are experienced and fully qualified to disability teacher level.
